How to find your way around a canvas, keep your work and recover when something goes wrong.

Reading and the map

Every canvas has two views of the same cards. Read shows one card at a time in reading order, with Previous and Next. Map shows how the cards connect. Switch between them in the toolbar, or with the Read and Map tabs on a phone.

On the map, drag the background to move around and pinch or use + and − to zoom. Double-click a card’s title (or tap it on a phone) to read it. Search the canvas with ⌘/Ctrl+K. Help and shortcuts in a canvas lists every shortcut next to its mouse and touch equivalent.

AI answers can be wrong or incomplete. Cards list their web sources where they used them; check anything important against a trusted source.

Asking

The message box shows what you are asking about, so you know where the answer will go:

A card’s + button offers ready-made asks: explain, go deeper, an example, show visually and more.

Using your material

With a free account you can add your own sources to a canvas: PDFs with selectable text up to 10 MB and 300 pages, pasted text up to 200,000 characters, or a public article link. Up to 5 per canvas.

Answers can then draw on them, and cards cite the source and page they used. Scanned PDFs have no text to read, so paste the text instead. Removing a material deletes its text; cards that cited it say “Removed material”.

Saving, undo and Trash

Your changes save as you go. The toolbar says Saving…, then Saved once the server has them; it never says saved before that. Without an account, your first canvas belongs to this browser for seven days. Choose Save this canvas to create a free account and keep it; you come back to it once you have confirmed your email and signed in.

Undo and Redo in the toolbar (or ⌘/Ctrl+Z) take back your recent changes to a canvas: a deleted card, a moved note, a new layout or a whole answer. Undoing an answer doesn’t give its prompt back.

From your library, you can archive a canvas to put it out of the way, or move it to Trash. A canvas in Trash can be read and exported but not changed until you restore it. On a plan with a canvas limit, archived canvases count toward it and canvases in Trash don’t. Canvases stay in Trash until you choose Delete forever, which can’t be undone.

Sharing and export

Share in a canvas’s menu makes a read-only link to a copy of it as it is now. Later changes aren’t in the copy until you choose Update snapshot. The copy has the explanation cards and their web sources, and your notes only if you include them. Your progress, your conversations with the AI and your material are never in it. Revoke link stops the link working for everyone.

Export as Markdown downloads a canvas, with an answer key and your progress if you choose. Print or save as PDF opens a printable page. Your account page exports every canvas at once.

Prompts and plans

Each plan includes a number of prompts a month. Here is what uses one:

Starting a canvas
1 prompt
A question or follow-up
1 prompt
Summarising a card
1 prompt
Check where I am
1 prompt
Find next steps
1 prompt
Suggestions written with an answer
Included
Retrying after an answer failed on our side
Free, once
Retrying an answer you stopped
1 prompt
Notes, Trash, restoring, deleting, undo and redo
Never counted

Compare plans and what uses a prompt. Your account page shows how many prompts you have used this month.

Your progress

You can mark a card understood or to revisit. These are your own marks. Getting a quiz right on the first try marks its card understood too. Quiz results are kept separately, so you can see what a quiz checked and what you marked yourself.

Progress in the toolbar shows what you have opened, marked and checked, and suggests a next step. Step through cards to revisit with [ and ]; your home page lists them too.

When something fails

“Couldn’t save”
Your last change didn’t reach the server. Choose Retry to send it again. If it keeps failing, check your connection.
An answer stopped
You pressed Stop. Cards it had already added stay. Retrying asks again and uses a prompt on a plan that counts them.
An answer didn’t finish
Something failed on our side. Cards it had already added stay, and the next retry on that question is free, once.
A plan limit
The message says which limit you reached: prompts, saved canvases or a level. See plans shows what each plan includes; you can also move a canvas to Trash to make room.
A PDF won’t import
“Busy” means other imports are running: try again in a moment. A PDF with no selectable text (a scan) can’t be read; paste the text instead.
You were signed out
Choose Sign in in the message. You come back to the same canvas, and a question you were asking stays in the message box.
No connection
Nothing was sent. Check your connection, then try again.
